Services · domestic & outdoor

Everything from a dead socket to a lit garden.

Ten things we do, all of them properly. Everyday domestic electrics carried out and tested to the 18th Edition of BS 7671, plus the garden and external lighting design work that most electricians hand straight to someone else.

01

Garden lighting design

A drawn scheme, low-voltage LED, then an evening on site aiming it.

The part of the business we'd do all day if we could. We'd always recommend a proper garden lighting plan is drawn up before anything goes in the ground — where the light comes from, what it lands on, and just as importantly what stays dark. As a rough guide we suggest setting aside somewhere around 6–10% of an overall garden build budget for the lighting, because it's the part of the garden you use every evening from October through to March. Low-energy LED throughout, fittings chosen to survive a wet Berkshire winter, and a return visit after dark to aim, shield and dim until it looks right rather than floodlit.

02

External & security lighting

Floodlights, PIR sensors, porch, driveway and wall lights.

The practical outdoor stuff: a light over the back door that comes on when you're carrying shopping, PIR floodlights down the side return, driveway and gate lighting, lights under a car port. Weatherproof fittings, weatherproof glands and junctions, and cable run properly rather than clipped along a fence and hoped for. Often fitted at the same time as a decorative garden scheme so there's one tidy supply outside instead of three.

03

Consumer unit replacement

The fuse box, brought up to a modern RCBO board with surge protection.

The consumer unit — the fuse box — is the central hub of electricity in your home, and on a lot of houses around Ascot it's the oldest thing in the building. Our standard installation is a full RCBO board with a surge protection device (SPD) fitted as standard, using brands we'd happily put in our own homes. Every circuit is tested before and after, anything we find along the way gets explained rather than quietly ignored, and you get the certificate at the end.

04

EICRs & electrical safety inspections

Landlord and homeowner condition reports, with a full written result.

An Electrical Installation Condition Report should be carried out every five years on rented accommodation and roughly every ten years on a general domestic property. We do both the visual inspection and the dead and live testing, then give you a full written report setting out what was found and how it's coded — so you know what's genuinely dangerous, what wants improving and what's absolutely fine. If remedial work is needed we'll price it separately; you're never obliged to have us do it.

05

Smart home technology

Smart thermostats, app-controlled lighting, schedules and occupancy sensors.

We can fit a smart thermostat to most modern boilers and central heating systems, so the heating is on when you're actually home rather than on a timer somebody set in 2014. On the lighting side we can put your circuits on app control, set schedules, and install occupancy sensors so hallways, lofts and utility rooms light themselves. Fitted by an electrician based at Winkfield Row — the same person who wired it is the person you ring when you want a second scene adding.

06

Fault finding

Something trips, something's dead — we test until we know why.

When a circuit keeps tripping or a run of sockets has gone dead, we come out, assess the situation and then work through a sequence of tests to establish exactly where the fault is, rather than replacing parts and hoping. Once we know what it is we can usually complete the repair the same visit and leave the installation safe again. If it turns out to be something bigger — a buried cable damaged by a fence post, water in an outside junction — you'll get the honest version and a price.

07

House rewiring

Full and partial rewires, planned around you living there.

Rewiring an occupied house is as much about sequencing as it is about cable. We work room by room where we can, agree in advance where the sockets, switches and lighting points are actually going to be useful, and keep the dust and disruption contained. New circuits, a new consumer unit, everything earthed and bonded to current regs, tested and certificated at the end. Ideal alongside an extension, a new kitchen, or a house that still has rubber-sheathed cable in the loft.

08

EV charging points

A home charge point, wired back to the board properly.

A home charger on the side of the house or garage, on its own correctly protected circuit back to the consumer unit, with the cable run dressed and clipped rather than draped. We'll look at where the board is, what the existing supply can carry and where the car actually parks before recommending anything — and we'll tell you if the board needs attention first instead of bolting a 7kW load onto something tired.

09

Hot tub installation

A dedicated outdoor supply, protected and weatherproofed.

A hot tub is a serious continuous load sitting outdoors in the rain, so it gets its own supply: correctly rated cable, RCD protection, an isolator you can actually reach, and outdoor-rated enclosures throughout. We'll coordinate around whoever's delivering and siting the tub, and get the supply in place before it lands rather than after.

10

Interior lighting design

Kitchen, bathroom and living-room schemes, on sensible dimming.

The same thinking we apply outdoors, applied indoors: layers rather than a grid of downlights in the middle of the ceiling. Task lighting where you actually chop and read, softer light where you sit, dimming that works with LED instead of buzzing at it, and bathroom fittings with the right IP rating for the zone they're in. Usually specified at first-fix stage during a kitchen or bathroom refit, but plenty of it can be retro-fitted too.

Not sure which of those it is?

Most people ring describing a symptom rather than a service — a socket that's gone dead, a board that trips when the kettle goes on, a garden that disappears at four o'clock in November. Describe it in your own words and we'll tell you what's actually involved and what it's likely to cost.
